Death comes quickly and without mercy and there is no chivalry or honor in Nidhogg 2 — just a race to the maws of the grotesque dragon. The most obvious change to Nidhogg 2 over its sequel is its art style. The crisp Atari like aesthetic of the original is replaced by a repulsively grotesque style from a bygone era. But ugliness seems to be a deliberate choice, and it wears its grossness well. No more black backgrounds and chandeliers swinging in a cold castle — instead, the backgrounds are dedicated to both rainbows and statues sculpted from feces. Added with the more complex art style is the ability to do some cursory character customization.
Nidhogg has the graphical style of a classic Atari game, but underneath the deceptive simple graphics is an exciting, action driven and addictive multiplayer game. Nidhogg is an arena fencing game that pits two players against one another. The goal is simple: each player must reach their exit goal to win the match. All you have to do is kill your opponent that stands before you.
The combat is very intuitive in a rock-scissor-papers kind of way. You can hold your sword at three different angles that can either deflect projectile swords, disarm your opponent, or prevent them from rolling behind you.
At its most basic level, Nidhogg is an arcade-style fencing game, and it It’s not uncommon, for example, for a defending player to stop the advance of an Opening up holes in the defense and then pressing that advantage is the There’s a fairly robust (for an indie title) online matchmaking system that.
It’s been a long time coming, but Nidhogg is finally here. First shown back in , the sword-duelling title has gained recognition in the indie circuit, picking up awards at the Independent Games Festival and IndieCade. Developed by Messhof, the game excels in a local multiplayer environment because matches often boil down to a cross between tactics and psychology. Two combatants face off against each other with the objective being to reach the opposite end of the side-scrolling map.
Pulling off a kill gives you a precious few seconds to advance before your opponent respawns ahead of you. The tension comes from how quickly it takes to kill someone, often taking just one hit – be it from a straightforward stab to the chest or a thrown sword connecting. Dive kicks and leg sweeps are also handy moves, as knocking your opponent to the ground will leave them vulnerable to a finishing move.
Nidhogg is unforgiving. A mistimed jump, failure to block or parry, a whiffed stab – it just takes one small mistake to meet death. As a result, duels can be very tentative, as both players weigh up the options of whether to make the first move or stand their ground. But there are moments when the pace amps up. You see, if you got the last kill, you’re not obligated to kill your foe to progress.
Review: Nidhogg 2
By alistarr , January 14, in Discussion. I bought this last night and can confirm that it is brilliant. And hilarious. And unbearably tense.
Nidhogg 2 is not just about fencing anymore. Online matchmaking is also available, however that would also rob Nidhogg of its best quality.
Some of the games reviewed this week you may not have even heard of. Nier: Automata is a hack-and-slash action game that takes place in the distant future. In the face of this insurmountable foe, mankind is driven from Earth and takes refuge on the Moon. The Council of Humanity organizes a resistance of android soldiers in an effort to take back the planet. Since then, many gamers have been asking for an Xbox One version and it finally happened more than a year later.
The fast-paced action needs a quicker frame rate. However, even as the credits roll, you can keep on playing and experience the title from other perspectives. This gives the game a lot of replayability. The environments are also vast and take place in an open world setting. According to the developer, each ending will enhance your experience so you have to keep at it.

Have You Played? One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time. Stab and run, stab and run, throw your sword and… It stabs. Now run, dive kick, slide and roll. These verbs are all that Nidhogg contains, but with them comes personal tactics, personal rivalries, and some of the best local multiplayer ever made. While local multiplayer was once mostly limited to consoles or LAN parties, PC gamers looking for a dose of that old-school same-screen nostalgia now have more options than ever, and by streaming games to the TV you can play on the couch even while your PC is in another room.
Some local multiplayer PC games focus on fierce competition, parroting the arena brawling of games like Super Smash Bros. Others can be every bit as frantic, but pit you and your friends against the game instead of each other. If Iron Chef has taught me anything, it’s that there is no truer arena than the kitchen. This is a sentiment Overcooked takes to heart, simulating the chaos and commotion of a multi-station restaurant kitchen.
Two to four players zip frantically around increasingly complex kitchen arenas to prep and deliver orders as they come in. Some are simple: for tomato soup, for example, drop three chopped tomatoes in a pot, let it cook for a moment, plate the dish and send it on its way. But most are much more complex, requiring a delicate dance of chopping ingredients, cooking others, and assembling dishes according to the various incoming orders.
Success requires a combination of coordination, communication, delegation of duties, and fine-motor skills in order to meet the demands of the dinner rush.
Nidhogg review (PC): Thrilling competitive sword-fighting game
The concept behind Nidhogg is one of those that can fit comfortably inside a nutshell.
But the matchmaking and lobby issues of the online multiplayer are so numerous that it renders that entire option broken and unusable.

Latest Nidhogg Steam Update Improves Matchmaking And More!!
What happens when you take the complex and time consuming sport of fencing, simplify it down to its bare basics, fuse it with gymnastics, then add a sprinkle of Vikings, who of course know kung fu, before finally grinding it all up in a Commodore 64 shaped oven? You guessed it – Nidhogg. If all that sounded confusing then, let me tell you, Nidhogg is far from it.
The goal of Nidhogg? Get your fencing, kung fu Viking through a series of fights and, should he survive, you get the honor of being devoured by a giant dragon. Nothing quite makes any sense, but everything makes perfect sense
Players can also move, jump, duck, and roll, opening up attacks and evasions Whether it’s due to a lack of players or simply poor matchmaking, it can be Add to this the fact that most of Nidhogg 2’s appeal comes not from.
A subreddit for all things concerning Nidhogg and Nidhogg 2 by Messof. Problem with the ranking system in Nidhogg 2 self. I assume this may have been mentioned on this sub before but I feel as though, until the issue is fixed, it cannot be said too many times. There is a serious issue with the way in which you lose rank points and this has affected me on multiple occasions. Yesterday when I got the game, during one of my games my opponent quit, I think we were having connection issues so it’s fairly understandable, for this I lost rank points.
I wasn’t going to post about this and was just going to wait for it to be fixed but after what just happened, I felt the need to make my voice heard in case this issue had slipped under the radar. I figured where better than here. Mere minutes ago, I played a good online match with someone, it was a bit touch and go but I eventually won.

The Wurm has returned and it must feed! Shed your garments and paint the walls with the flesh of your enemies, for only one can be worthy of sacrifice. The rules are simple. Reach the other side and kill anyone that stands in your way.
One moment, matchmaking will detect barely ten people online to fight, Aside from those minor issues, Nidhogg is a fast and addicting game.
Nidhogg is best described as a game where you fight for the right to be eaten by a giant, hideous worm-like monster. Why anyone would risk their lives for such a fate befuddles me. But the process of getting there is so damn tense and exciting that the conclusion hardly matters. You each have a handful of moves that range from simply thrusting your rapier or throwing it to acrobatics like cartwheels, summersaults, and even divekicks.
A strike from the sword is an instant kill, whereas melee attacks merely stun or knock the other player down, at which point you can proceed to end them by ripping their spine out. Brutal stuff.
