Amino acid dating is a dating technique [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] used to estimate the age of a specimen in paleobiology , molecular paleontology , archaeology , forensic science , taphonomy , sedimentary geology and other fields. This technique relates changes in amino acid molecules to the time elapsed since they were formed. All biological tissues contain amino acids. This means that the amino acid can have two different configurations, “D” or “L” which are mirror images of each other.

With a few important exceptions, living organisms keep all their amino acids in the “L” configuration. When an organism dies, control over the configuration of the amino acids ceases, and the ratio of D to L moves from a value near 0 towards an equilibrium value near 1, a process called racemization.

It is a truism that politics makes for strange bedfellows, but there is evidence that it also makes for normal bedfellows. Political scientists and sociologists have sought to understand what drives this homogeneity. Do people seek partners who have similar political beliefs? Are shared politics a side effect of other factors, such as shared religious beliefs?

A recent article in the Journal of Politics by Gregory Huber, Yale professor of political science, and Neil Malhotra, a professor of political economy at Stanford University, offers fresh insight into these questions. The researchers found evidence that people are more inclined to seek dating partners who have similar political characteristics as them but that other factors, such as religion or race, are more significant in determining relationships than political similarity.

Previously, commentators and researchers have reasonably speculated that this might be due to higher prevalence of medical problems such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes among BME communities, or higher deprivation. The findings, based on detailed data, show that this only accounts for a small part of the excess risk.

Consequently, further work must be done to fully understand why BME people are at such increased risk of death. Additionally, people from deprived social backgrounds were also found to be at a higher risk of death, which also could not be explained by other risk factors. Results confirmed that men are at increased risk from COVID death, as well as people of older ages and those with uncontrolled diabetes.
